Rather obvious from the name, American Black Ales are dark; but there is actually a rather wide range of acceptable darkness as well as roasty maltiness in these beers.  The one thing they will probably have in common though is plenty of hoppiness usually provided by American Hops.  Alcohol content ranges from 5 - 10%.
