I found this American Porter to be subtle, and although I actually admire that quality in beer, this one was too subtle.  It had nice roasty flavor as you would expect, then had a muddled middle which kind of let me down.  Drinkability is excellent, aided in part by low carbonation.  I was shocked when I read what Beer Advocates had to say about Coal Porter as their descriptions don't jive with what I tasted at all.  The only thing I can think of is that this beer says 'Hand Crafted in Small Batches' on the label.  That makes me think that there is probably a great deal of variability in the batches.  Also, perhaps it tastes a lot different when fresh, and perhaps mine wasn't fresh.
