To me this Euro Dark Lager tastes almost like a mixture of Shiner Black and Shiner Bock. It's medium bodied with medium carbonation and feels every bit like a product of 'Shiner'. Although this beer is every bit as dark as Shiner Black, the flavor comes off lighter and a little thinner it seems. Its flavor has a little roasted malt and a little ambiguous bitterness. The one thing that I noticed is that it tastes a little adjuncty. In fact, if it wasn't for that, I would probably have liked this every bit as much as I like Shiner brews. However, that tiny adjunct-y flavor added to the overall fact that it isn't complex and may be a little 'thin', kinda seals the deal for me. But don't get me wrong, this beer isn't bad, it's just I don't live in Spain, so I can get domestics with every bit as much flavor as Alhambra Negra (like the aforementioned Shiner Black and Shiner Bock) and if I'm going to spring for an Import, I'd much rather get a Kostritzer or Fuller's London Porter. So, ultimately this beer falls into that huge category of beers that are definitely better than your average Light Lager, yet fall short of greatness. |
