Fire Island Red Wagon IPA
|
This American IPA has actually got a really nice malt backbone. And besides the more obvious and expected hoppiness, it also has a secondary earthiness which I liked. Red Wagon IPA is very smooth; with what is, I believe, mild bitterness for an IPA. The malt is a caramel malt that meshes quite well with the hops used. I'm guessing it's not hoppy and bitter enough for serious hop heads, but for me, a lover of balance and beer flavor, it's quite good. Just to be clear, this does skew absolutely to the hoppy side, but compared to other IPA's it is pretty balanced. I like that mild earthiness, something I don't seem to pick up on in most American IPA's and something that generally speaking, I like in a beer, at least in Ales. For the record, the primary hop flavor was piney.
