This Foreign / Export Stout seemed thin and alcohol-y to me. It did have, shall we say, the traditional roasted malt with a burnt bitterness as many stouts do; however here it seemed a little thin and watery with an alcohol-i-ness that permeated every sip. That being said, after adjusting to those first stronger than expected sips, there is a sort of understated elegance and smoothness to this brew. Sure the alcohol is detectable but doesn't technically cross that annoyance line for me. It is a bit thin, then again, if one were drinking this in Jamaica, I imagine thinness would be an asset. It's probably no surprise, but Jamaica Stout has a dry finish. This doesn't appear to be a complex brew but rather a simple straightforward beer that I would say is sessionable except for its 7.6% alcohol content which oddly enough already seems to be affecting me. I think what I like best about this beer is the intangible concept that the more I drink of it, the more I like it. My guess is, if this beer were of a style I appreciated more, I would have given it a noticeably higher rating. I suppose what I'm saying is that this could actually be one of my 'go to' beers, except that generally speaking I don't really 'go to' Foreign / Export Stouts.
