Natural Light

This Light Lager was actually a pleasant surprise. But just to be clear, I'm not saying it's going to compete with a Chimay Blue, but in the realm of Light Lagers, excluding the exceptional Sam Adams Light, I think you'd be hard pressed to find one better than Natural Light. When I first decided to give this a 6 (subsequently knocked down to 5), I thought, "Is it really twice as good as Bud Light?". The answer was, I don't know. Then I noticed I also gave Busch beer a 3, and yes, Natural Light is twice as good as Busch beer, at least to me. Here's the deal with Natural Light, it is basically thin in mouth-feel and basically watery with typical Anheuser-Busch carbonation. But the flavor, although light, was there and it wasn't overly adjunct-y. I thought I tasted some, sure, but overall, I thought the adjunct-i-ness was minimal, especially for a cheap domestic light lager. It's easy drinking and smooth except for the Anheuser-Busch carbonation, but to me anyway, the adjunct was minimized while the non-adjunct beer flavors, as light as they were, were used to maximum effect. In the interest of full disclosure;... I had never in my life had a Natural Light before and believe it or not, I'm not sure I even knew it existed until a little over a year or two ago, so this isn't some beer I "grew up on" and therefore I don't have any sentimental attachment to it. However, there was one flavor here, that was ever so slight, that I enjoyed, that reminded me of a beer that I did taste when I was young,... a tiny metallic taste. A taste that reminded me of Pabst Blue Ribbon. If a beer has a strong metallic taste, I generally hate it, but a tiny metallic taste, for some reason, I like, and Natural Light seems to have it (and having drunk this after pouring it from a bottle, it wasn't transferred from a can). At any rate, I doubt this beer will win any awards in the beer community, but man, after a long hot grueling day at work or with a bowl of spicy chili, I could see Natural Light really hitting the spot. Although, with so many choices out there, I don't know if there is anything here to make me purchase it again, still, it was way better than I was expecting.
