North Coast Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale
|
This Belgian Strong Dark Ale does have the fine type of carbonation typically found in Belgian made beers, however it was very, lightly carbonated. Although, I'd stop short of saying it was too light. It has a dark malt and dark fruity flavor as you would expect from the style. It leans slightly towards the sweet side and at times I almost pick up a wine like taste. Considering it is a beer with 9.4% alcohol, the alcohol is hidden pretty well. You do get that high alcohol vibe, but it doesn't give you that annoying burn through. On the surface it seems to have everything a Belgian Strong Dark Ale should, so I'm wondering why I don't love it like I love say Chimay Blue or St Bernardus Christmas Ale. In the end, I think it comes down to richness and complexity. This is a beer that leans towards heavy but the flavor just doesn't seem to be as rich and complex as some others of the style I like better. Perhaps, it's just a personal preference.
