Odell Cutthroat Porter
|
This American Porter is very Stout like to me. Not in the majorly bitter and thin Guinness Extra Stout kind of way, but nevertheless, the mouth-feel seems a bit thin for a porter, but probably spot on for stouts. In addition, the roastiness skews towards the burnt and bitter side, much like a stout. That being said, it does have plenty of flavor with the aforementioned roasted and a bit burnt malt dominating. I stop short of saying the flavor is rich though, I think it is because it seems to me to be pretty hard to get really rich flavor without a full mouth-feel. It's not real complex, but at the same time not a one hit wonder either. The aftertaste is fairly clean and since it's not overly complex and has 5.0% alcohol I could definitely see sessioning Cutthroat Porter. This is one of those beers that is very good, but disappoints me because I feel like it is on the cusp of greatness, but just doesn't leap that last hurdle. My guess is that if this beer had a rich, full mouth-feel, I would absolutely love it. But, like most American Beers, this one skews thin.
