Oskar Blues Ten Fidy
|
A smile came to my face as I poured Ten Fidy into a glass because when it comes out of the can it looks just like used motor oil. I suppose for some that smile would be a frown. Regardless, I don't generally consider 'looks' when it comes to beer, so that's just an observation. At any rate, this Russian Imperial Stout was very smooth. I don't know why, but when I see the word 'Imperial' in the name of a beer style, I'm expecting my taste buds to get a smack down, but Ten Fidy is remarkably smooth. The mouth-feel is full (which seems to be the standard for Oskar Blues) and the carbonation low. The flavor was of dark roasted malt and coffee with a little woodiness and some finishing burnt bitterness. I suppose all that sounds good, and it was good, but for me not great. I suppose the reason I didn't like it more is that it seemed like some alcohol burns through on the finish, and although it had less burnt bitterness than many stouts, that finish of alcohol and burnt bitterness just doesn't entice me to take another sip. (Although, I did continue to drink it.) Lastly, I do think that the carbonation was too low. That being said, this is a good beer and I wouldn't be surprised if some thought it was great, the mouth-feel is full and the flavor is there without being overbearing in any particular direction. (I think I'm going to drink the rest of my Ten Fidy four pack along side some single malt scotch, as I have a suspicion the flavors will mesh together very well)
