BeerTripper Small

Real Ale Devil's Backbone

This Tripel definitely has some clove flavor going on.  Luckily for me it stops short of being too clovey, but just barely.  The mouth-feel borders on full, while the carbonation is medium, but somehow seems more aggressive than that.  Alcohol burns through in the finish which skews towards dry.  There is a sweet malt here, but that is more than balanced out by the alcohol and bitterness.  It's weird how American Brewers can't seem to nail Belgian styles, generally speaking.  Such is the case here.  Don't get me wrong, this is a good beer.  But somehow, compared to most Belgian made Tripel's, it seems, too simplistic.  The carbonation for one doesn't seem to be of that really fine type you see in Belgian made beers.  Devil's Backbone is on the strong side, at least in taste.  This beer almost burns going down,... almost.  Nice, but not quite my cup of tea.  I feel a bit bad giving this a 6 as it seems to be pretty much an IN YOUR FACE Tripel, which I'm sure will please many, but for me, I suppose I like a slightly subtler approach.
