Saint Arnold Santo
|
This is an interesting beer. It is somehow reminiscent of a Witbier despite the fact that it is dark. It seems spicy, with a clove-y like flavor and has a dark malt backbone. Classified as a Kölsch, it really isn't all that Kölsch like. (I don't really grade beers based on how they fit within their styles, but thought I'd mention it in case someone is thinking of buying this thinking it is going to be very Kölsch-like.) The mouth-feel is medium and the carbonation lively. Santo is on the dry side and finishes fairly cleanly. I suppose the reason I don't like this beer more is that it that although interesting, it is fairly simple, not as complex as one might think especially in regards to the malt flavor, which is definitely pleasant, but not especially deep or rich and so at times it comes off a bit thin and watery flavor-wise. Which could be exactly what they were going for, after all, it tastes a little bit like something that would come out of Shiner. (I'm sort of thinking that this beer would actually be great washing down Mexican Food.)
