Samuel Smith India Ale
|
To my palate this English India Pale Ale bears little resemblance to other IPA's that I've tried. (Although that's not necessarily a bad thing.) The most notable difference is the softness of the hops. Hop bitterness is the not the only flavor, nor is it necessarily the overwhelming flavor present. There is enough malt barley malt here to provide balance. It's smooth, easy drinking has a decent mouth-feel with low carbonation. I could actually session this no problem. The flavor is complex and consists of a real woodiness and earthiness. There also seems to be an essence of citrus in there. This beer is dry though and leaves a bit of an astringent element on my tongue after each sip. Honestly, if I were categorizing this myself, I might call it an English Bitter or ESB. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)
