Sherwood Forest Friars Belgian-Style White Ale
|
First off, if you are new to this site, always remember that the best beer is the beer you like best. Everyone enjoys different flavors to different degrees so everything rated here will be skewed to my palate. I bring this up here because, man, my palate does not like Sherwood Forest Friar's. This Witbier puts the usual 'spice' flavors of Witbiers front and center. Those spices are definitely the dominate flavors of this beer, with citrus probably the next most penetrating flavor. There is an essence of malt up front so it isn't totally neglected, but man when that citrus and spice combination hits mid sip, they definitely take over. They even linger after the sip is swallowed. Ultimately, the malt part almost tastes watery, although I wouldn't say this beer has a watery mouth-feel. At any rate, if spice and citrus is your favorite part of a Witbier, you will undoubtedly like Sherwood Forest Friar's more than I did, however, I prefer malt with the spice and citrus a subdued supporting cast, so... It's spicy, it's dry, it has some citrus, it doesn't seem to have any off flavors, but man, it's not for me.
