|
This American IPA has a sweet caramel malt flavor upfront. Each sip ends with a fairly smooth piney grapefruity hop flavor. The hops are not suffocating which is nice. Somehow though there seems to be a metallic wateriness in the middle. The mouth-feel wasn't thin, I'd say medium, barely; but the flavor sometimes seemed slightly thin in the middle of each sip. With a name like HopDevil, I was expecting my palate to be attacked by hops, but instead I received what is actually rather balanced for an American IPA; smooth as well. Normally that would have vaulted this beer pretty high in my rankings, however there was that aforementioned what seemed to be unusual watery middle. Sometimes I actually got the feeling this was made by a macro brewery. I'm also wondering if maybe mine was past its prime. Like most beers, this is probably better fresh from the tap at the brewery, and perhaps I'd have loved it then, but from this bottle, it was nice to be sure, but far from my favorite American IPA.
